Intro

My old handy Norelco razor died a few years ago which sent me on a search for a replacement. At the time, I noticed that there were a lot of changes and new features associated with the newer electric razors.

I decided to compile a list of ‘requirements’ for a new razor for me. It was important to me that the razor have the following capabilities:

  • Reasonably quick charge time
  • Reasonable battery life on a full charge
  • 3 head rotary style
  • Easy to clean
  • Water resistant for cleaning
  • Replicable heads
  • Ability to use while charging

Most of the 3 head rotary style razors had most of the above requirements. The last one was the most difficult to find.

It seems that most new electric razors have a feature that doesn’t allow them to be used while charging. This is apparently because there are apparently people out there who tried to use their razor in the shower while charging. I don’t understand the logic behind bringing an electric appliance that is plugged in into the shower! But apparently the legal team at the major manufacturers decided to shut of the ability to use the razor while charging to avoid situations like that.

Given that there are people who don’t understand what can happen if you try to use an electronic device while plugged in in the shower, my search became very limited.

What Did I Choose?

I chose the Phillips S3552 electric razor. It is a 3 head rotary electric razor that is capable of functioning in both wet and dry conditions. It charges within an hour or so, and can be used while charging. Given that I’d never bring the razor in the shower to shave anyway, it’s nice to know that if the battery runs out, but I need a shave, I can plug the razor in, use it, and then leave it to complete the charge. Otherwise, I’d have to plug the razor in to charge and wait until there is enough charge to unplug it, use it, and then plug it back in to complete the charge.

Below are pictures of the razor. It’s no longer made (probably because of the charging ‘issue’), but they pop up every once in a while on Ebay. Note: This is not the S3500 (which I believe does not run while charging).
